Helpful Tips For Safe Storage

Safe Storage Do's:

  • Easiest way to store bins are on utility shelves
  • Use Plastic Totes instead of boxes
  • Plan your storage space. Place items you need to access often near the front. Allow for walkways
  • Make an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place
  • Use uniform size boxes or Plastic Totes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough for the things you put in them
  • List contents of boxes or Plastic Totes on the sides and top. Number boxes and seal them with tape
  •  Stack lighter boxes or Plastic Totes on top of heavier ones
  • Wrap dishes and glassware in paper and stack on top
  • Wrap pictures & mirrors in cardboard, mark as fragile, stack on end
  • Use furniture with drawers to store items such as photos, knick- knacks, and china. Wrap breakable items in towels, or blankets
  • Tables with removable legs can be “broken down” to save space
  • Sofas and love seats can be stored on end to save floor space
  •  If storing on a concrete floor, place items on boards or pallets to guard against dampness
  • Cover furniture with blankets or sheets to protect against dust
  • If you stand mattresses on their side, prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they may bend and lose their shape
  • Shovels, rakes, and hoses can be stored in empty trash cans

Safe Storage Don't's:

  • Do not use plastic to cover your belongings. It retains moisture
  • Do not store any food items. This will prevent any unwanted guests
  • Do not pack your boxes so that they are too heavy to carry them. Especially when you are packing books
  • Do not assume that your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. Purchase the insurance
  • Do not give out your password, gate code or any information to any one that is not listed as having access
  • Do not use printed newspaper for wrapping. The ink may smudge and get on your items
  • Do not forget to clean appliances before you store them
  • Do not store any toxins or flammables such as paint, oil, or gasoline
